Ask a Nerd! How to Succeed During a College Interview

Ask a Nerd! How to Succeed During a College Interview First Impressions Count: How to Succeed during a College Interview Ask a Nerd! Question: I was lucky enough to get an interview with somebody at the college of my choice but I dont know how to conduct myself in an interview, what should I do??? Brief: A college interview provides the chance to make a great first impression or a really bad one. Its important that people who are accepted for an interview conduct themselves in a mature and professional manner. Answer Interviewing for college is very similar to interviewing for a job except that students interviewing on a college campus often dont have the practice that their older counterparts do when it comes to interview etiquette our Orange County college admissions consultants are here to help. The majority of students are not asked to an interview, especially at larger universities, however, students who do have the opportunity to interview are generally in one of two positions: either they are at the top of the list and the school wants to learn more about them, or their application has been put in the “maybe” pile and the interview is their last chance to be put into the “yes” pile. Its essential for applicants to take the interview very seriously and follow basic etiquette in order to be successful (READ: 8 Reasons Applicants Fail to Get Into the College of Their Choice). 1. Manners Just as with any type of interview, students should use the best etiquette possible. They should be appropriately dressed with khakis and a collared shirt (at a minimum) for young men, and professional slacks or skirts (at a minimum) for young ladies. Students should wear comfortable shoes because part of the interview may include a walk around campus. Applicants should make sure that theyre sitting up straight and addressing the interviewer as Mr. or Ms., unless theyre told otherwise 2. Preparation Even the most seasoned job applicants will get nervous at an interview so its no wonder that somebody interviewing for college would feel extremely nervous and unprepared. That’s why its important to practice ahead of time. Students are encouraged to participate in mock interviews where they ask questions to parents or peers and get feedback on the validity and appropriateness of the questions. 3. All the right questions Students are advised to use these precious 30 minutes or so to ask any and all questions they have about the university in general, the programs they are interested in, the faculty, accommodation, campus life etc… This is the one and only chance a student will have to receive in-depth information prior to making a final decision if they would like to attend the school or not. Its advised that all applicants use this time wisely. 4. Thank them for their time Very few people remember to thank a professional for their time these days. Although it’s an education professional’s job to spend their time with students, its important that the applicant being interviewed understands that everybodys time is valuable. Students who are selected for an interview should always thank the person for their time, both upon entering the interview and upon leaving. People who feel that their time is valued are often willing to go the extra mile while, on the other, people who feel that their time is expected may choose not to do this. A “thank you” costs nothing but pays back many times over (READ: Tips From an Orange County Academic Tutor: Tracking Progress). In Short Any student lucky enough to receive an interview at a college or university should remember that it’s their one shot to get extra information as well as an insider’s look into the university. They should also remember to prepare ahead of time and follow traditional interview etiquette. The college interview is a great way to go from the “maybe” pile into the list of accepted applicants and also make those final choices about where to attend school. 5 Things to do Before Finishing the 8th Grade - TutorNerds

5 Things to do Before Finishing the 8th Grade - TutorNerds 5 things to do before finishing the 8th grade The end of the school year is not far away, and students currently in the eighth grade will face a major change in their academic life next year, they will soon be high school students. 8th graders have to face finals week just like they did in years past but there are some additional things they can do to help them prepare for the summer as well as their impending future as a high school student. Whether working on organizational skills or self-motivation 8th graders can make their lives a lot easier by refining a few important academic skills before they complete the school year. 1.   Effective study habits Students entering high school will be expected to have pretty decent study habits. They will need to be able to sit down and start homework assignments on their own, take the initiative to ask questions or get help when needed, work effectively within a group, and so on. There are lots of changes going on in middle school and junior high but ninth grade teachers will expect a certain level of commitment from their students so its a good idea to start looking at study habits now and make any necessary adjustments over the summer. 2.   Time management and organization Another thing thats incredibly important for 8th grade students to master is time management and organization. Students might have three hours of studying or homework to complete over the weekend but, if they’re disorganized, it can take forever. So many students dont get things done on time or miss important deadlines because they lack personal time management skills. To be fair, most adults struggle with time management to some degree so its not to say that young students need to be perfect. Rather, they should set a reasonable goal for improvement and work towards it. Students who have at least some organizational skills tend to not only do better academically but also tend to be happier and more relaxed during this major transition (READ: 10 Reasons Why You Need a Summer Tutor). 3.   Becoming a self-starter In the 8th grade teachers will still check up on students on a regular basis and ask if they understand the assignment, if they need any additional help, or if theyre struggling. In contrast, 9th grade teachers will encourage students to be self-starters and take the initiative to ask questions without prompting. If 8th graders have one major goal over the summer it should be to learn how to speak up when they dont understand something. Even if a student is uncomfortable asking a question aloud in class, they should get used to talking to the teacher after class or making an appointment to talk about challenging assignments. 4.   Communication with teachers Another really important factor of mastering the 8th grade is learning how to communicate with teachers. For instance, younger students generally say to a teacher I dont get the assignment or this doesnt make sense. Thats a good start because it lets the teacher know the student is struggling but, by high school, students should be able to specifically describe what it is they’re struggling with. For example, students can ask a question such as I dont understand the concept described on page 23 or I dont understand what specifically sparked (a particular war, revolution, or conflict). Specific questions definitely help the teacher figure out how to explain the difficult passage or concept to the student in detail. 5.   Choosing good role models as friends Another thing essential at this age is for students to start choosing friends based on their attitude and goals towards school and life. Most students stay at one high school for four years, so theyll likely have the same classmates this entire time. However, students moving from 8th to 9th grade will have an opportunity to reinvent themselves and make new friends. Classmates who are serious about getting work done, ask for help when needed, and have a positive attitude about school are more likely to encourage their friends to do well and stay on the right track. Everybody struggles from time to time, but the desire to succeed will make a difference in any student’s life. End the year strong with the help of our private San Diego middle school tutors. We have all the major subjects covered, and will help prepare your child as they make the big transition into high school. Chemistry Books For High School - How to Choose a Book

Chemistry Books For High School - How to Choose a BookWith the vast number of chemistry books available in the market, it is not surprising that parents are unable to choose from the variety of ones they have. The primary reason for this is because they need guidance and advice on choosing the right ones. But in reality, there is not a single book available which can provide you with free information on how to choose the best one from the bunch. This should be pretty clear now. You cannot rely on any book to give you the information you need.In fact, as a parent, you do not even have to rely on the help of your friends or family members. At best, they can make suggestions but at worst, they will be able to give you some very general tips. So, what you need is the direct and personal help of a qualified and experienced online advisor who will take over your homework for you.The role of an online chemistry advisor is very important because he can recommend you the books which you might have not even considered. In other words, you have only to choose a book which is in line with your existing knowledge and professional skills. For example, if you have a science degree, there is no way that you can understand chemistry books for high school level. Instead, you should have a master's degree so that you can understand properly the topics covered in the books.Once you choose a chemistry book that is appropriate to your level, you can have a chat with an online chemist and see whether you can learn anything new or whether you can avail some useful advice and tips. If you are able to get some useful tips, you can then pick the right chemistry book for your child. But as I said earlier, you should get the help of a qualified counselor because you do not have to pay for his time. You can easily locate one from a trusted online website or from any other known resource. But once you do this, you can be assured that you are going to get the assistance that you need. So, as you can see, there is no point in relying on free resources which will just give you practical information. Instead, you need to contact an expert who can give you knowledge and skills to understand more of the subject matter. Therefore, the world of science has not completely forgotten the importance of education which is not very difficult when you use the right resource.

How to Recover from a Disappointing Midterm Grade

How to Recover from a Disappointing Midterm Grade The transition from high school to college is a big one. Anecdotal evidence shows it is not uncommon for new freshmen to struggle with midterm exams. Even if you did well in high school, the new environment, increased academic rigor, and newfound freedom of college can decrease your academic performance. It can be difficult to balance the new experiences and the need to study. If you receive a disappointing grade on a midterm, it may be a warning sign that you need to find your life-school balance in order to recover by the end of the semester. The good news is, it is possible to recover from a disappointing midterm grade. With a little positivity, analysis, and hard work, you can lift yourself out of a poor grade situation. The following tips can help: Dont dwell on your bad midterm grade You earned a bad grade on an important testnow you need to accept it and move on. Dont waste time dwelling on your midterm grade; instead, work to fix the problem going forward. You can take an evening to drown your disappointment in a pint of Ben and Jerrys, but after that, focus on recovering from your subpar grade. Dont let this setback deter you from earning good grades. Identify problem subject areas To move forward, youll need to have a plan. The first thing you need to do is figure out what you need help with specifically. What particular content areas gave you trouble? Were you underprepared, or did you mistakenly think you understood the information? Did you make careless mistakes? Do you need help with time management or study skills? A tool that you may find helpful for this is an exam wrapper. Exam wrappers are questionnaires that help you identify problem areas on exams and identify ways you can improve your preparation for the next one. For example, if you received a C- on your college algebra midterm, an exam wrapper could help you identify that quadratic equations and augmented matrices are the concepts in which you are weakest. Furthermore, taking college algebra diagnostic tests or practice exams could provide additional insight (and extra practice) into your academic strengths and weaknesses. Seek academic help Dont be afraid to ask for help when you need it. If you do poorly on your midterm, you might want to make an appointment to see your professor. He or she can help you further identify your problem areas and can help explain the concepts that you do not understand. In addition, he or she may also suggest avenues for bringing up your grade, whether its an extra paper or an extra credit project. Is your chemistry grade less than ideal? You may also want to seek out chemistry tutors who can provide individualized attention you may not receive in a college lecture hall. Dont be afraid to seek out a study group or tutorials, as well. Prioritize your tasks and manage your time Figure out what you need to do to improve your gradethen do it. Although you should take time to eat, sleep, and otherwise take care of yourself, remember that you still have a relatively short period of time to buckle down and improve your grade before the semester ends. Evaluate your schedule and other commitments, and prioritize accordingly in order to reach your goal. Dont give up Bombing a midterm is not the end of the world. As F. Scott Fitzgerald said, Never confuse a single defeat with a final defeat. There are always opportunities to learn from and improve on a bad grade. The second half of the term is a very short amount of time in the grand scheme of things. Keep at ityou can do it! Even though you may have fallen short on your midterm, there is still time to recover. Believe it or not, this is a common occurrence, and it is important to move forward confidently. Accept what happened, figure out what you need help with, manage your remaining time, and stay focused through the end of the semester. A poor grade can help you develop necessary time management skills and lead to you find your balance between your social life and academic responsibilities.

Career Advice for the Young Introvert - Introvert Whisperer

Introvert Whisperer / Career Advice for the Young Introvert - Introvert Whisperer Career Advice for the Young Introvert Guest Author September 28, 2015 Career Development, Self-Promotion 2 responses Being nervous when entering a new job or the workforce, in general, is normal, and totally fine. If you don’t quite know where you’re going yet, here are a few things to know. Actions speak louder than words. We’ve all heard this once, twice, a thousand times, but it holds truth. Your actions will always speak louder than your words, so make them count. When it comes to your career, what you do is more important than what you say, since following through with a plan will build more trust than consistently saying you’ll do something. You do not have to constantly ask questions, or give updates on where you are. While it may be a good habit to get into, when your work is getting done without being asked, your reputation will build itself. Basically, to make a lasting impression you don’t have to speak above the crowd. Silence does not equal compliance.   Simple enough, but silence can sometimes be mistaken for a ‘yes’ in the workplace, and it’s important to make sure your opinion and voice are heard. Being able to have a voice in your workplace gives employees the ability to help fix conflict and make the work environment more inviting. It also gives the opportunity for feedback, which is important for self-growth. When you feel like you’re being unheard or ignored, your work or motivation can be negatively impacted. To succeed in your career, you’ll have to be able to explain your point of view and let others know, and you owe it to yourself to make sure you’re clear on what you want or why your idea is a good one. You’re not a stereotype of the creepy.   What I mean is, don’t let the idea that you’re antisocial keep you from a social job. While working from home seems like an introverts dream, you do not have to adhere to that stereotype, and you don’t have to let anyone box you in like that. Being shy and quiet are related to both introverts and ‘creepy’ people, not all suffer from social anxiety or shyness. In fact, some of the best jobs for introverts include Critical Care Nurses, Criminologists, and Interpreters and Translators. Introverts have characteristics of being observant, collected, and decisive, making it easy for us to thrive in social environments just as well as our extroverted counterparts. Being ‘shy’ can be used to your advantage.   So you’re quiet. So you don’t actively engage seek out conversation. So what? Being shy is said to make people more approachable, or easier to talk to because you don’t come off as threatening. If you’re shy, you’re also more likely to think before you act, clearly forming your ideas and plans before setting anything in motion. This gives people a form of stability and makes you more desirable because it builds that trust. Shy people also know how to problem solve on their own. Not saying this trait is exclusive to shy people, it’s a trait a lot of great workers have, but if we’re rolling with the stereotype, shy introverts internalize. Internalizing isn’t always the best practice, but shyer people tend to develop an easier ability to overcome obstacles; especially if you’ve fought against your own shyness.  Remember your own values. It’s a hard world, and a lot of the times you will have your values and morals put to the test. So, the last piece of advice I have is to remember where you stand. Advancing your career is obviously important, especially if you’ve set high standards, but don’t compromise yourself for a job. Wanting to adjust to being the right fit for is also normal, but losing grasp on what’s important to you isn’t worth the negative consequences that can follow. What do you prioritize in your career? Have you set a standard for yourself yet, or are you going to wait until you decide what you want? Keeping in mind your values and planning a course of action from there is the surest way to check yourself before you wreck what you’ve built up. Everything is subjective and case-by-case because personalities are fluid. Though I don’t know you personally, I hope you can take away something helpful from these five pieces of advice. 5 Ways Behavioral Interviewing Skills Help Professionally, Besides For Job Interviews - Introvert Whisperer

Introvert Whisperer / 5 Ways Behavioral Interviewing Skills Help Professionally, Besides For Job Interviews - Introvert Whisperer 5 Ways Behavioral Interviewing Skills Help Professionally, Besides For Job Interviews Interviewing for a job is often daunting and stressful even if you have completed multiple interviews for positions in the past. The behavior-based interviews became wildly popular in the 1970s and is still one of the most popular interview forms used today. A behavior interview allows prospective employers the chance to get to know potential employees on a more intimate and personal level before deciding whether or not they are right for the role that is available. Knowing why behavioral interviewing skills help professionally aside from job interviews is advisable when you foresee a future for yourself working in business or as an entrepreneur on your own. Decision Making and Problem Solving Making decisions and solving problems are two of the most important tasks required of professionals in the workplace. If you are unable to solve problems or make tough decisions, it becomes increasingly difficult to obtain leadership positions and roles with more authority. Before scheduling an upcoming interview it is important to review how you excel in problem-solving and when making decisions in the workplace. Employers are likely to ask questions such as: What are your preferred methods to solve problems in the workplace? Have you encountered a difficult problem at work in the past? If so, what steps did you take to remedy the issue? How comfortable are you with working with other members of your team to come to decisions or to fix issues that have arisen? What are your weaknesses when it comes to solving problems? How have you worked towards improving on the weaknesses that you perceive in yourself? Boost Your Self-Confidence When you are well-versed in behavior-based interviews, gain self-confidence even outside of the interview process. Once you become familiar with behavior-based interview questions it is much easier to feel confident and comfortable with yourself and your professional abilities. Self-confidence is necessary for networking and expanding your reach, regardless of the market or industry you work in each day. Having confidence in yourself is a way to attract other confident individuals and professionals in your life. When you believe in yourself, your abilities, and what you bring to the workplace, obtain any position or role you desire with less anxiety or self-doubt. Some questions you may be asked that are related to confidence during an interview include: How do you remain confident when handling customers or clients who are dissatisfied with the service they have been provided? What are your best workplace skills? Can you rank your knowledge of each subject on a scale from 1 to 10? Are you comfortable with leading a team during meetings and when communicating with clients and customers? What are your weaknesses in terms of your confidence and workplace skills and abilities? How do you remedy your weaknesses when faced with big problems and challenges? Are you comfortable with leading presentations or taking on the responsibility of an entire team? Where do you see yourself in five or ten years if you are still working in the industry? Is this position optimal for the type of growth you are seeking as a professional? How can we help you to achieve the professional goals you have set for yourself? What is your dream position with the skills and abilities you already have? Do you plan to expand on the skills you have already developed in the workplace? If so, how do you intend to obtain the necessary skills and abilities required for potential advancements in your career? Remain Motivated Once you have a clear understanding of behavior-based interview questions that are most commonly asked throughout the interview process, remain motivated in other business-related scenarios and situations. Self-motivation and discipline are both essential elements necessary for success as an entrepreneur or any professional working in a business-centric industry. Motivation is imperative when setting and sticking to both short and long-term goals, even if they are not work-related. Leadership Qualities Leadership qualities do not appear overnight and often require plenty of hard work, consistency, and dedication. Building leadership qualities help to obtain positions while moving up on the ladder in any workplace. When you understand the importance of behavior-based interview questions and you are familiar and comfortable with them, maintain a sense of leadership along with the self-confidence you have built in yourself. Some of the leadership questions that you may be asked while interviewing with an employer who is using behavior-based questions include: Do you consider yourself a leader at home and at work? If so, how do you lead others in your household or who are on your team throughout a project? What has been the most difficult leadership position you have taken on? How did you face the challenges you were presented as a leader? Do you enjoy working as a leader or do you prefer to be lead by others who are managing projects? If you do not enjoy leadership positions, can you expand on your reasons why? Are you comfortable with sharing leadership positions with others or do you prefer to take lead on a project and tackle it yourself? If you do not like working with others in leadership positions, are you able to elaborate? Improve Communication Skills Being comfortable with behavior-based interview questions is a great way to improve on your communication skills. Communication skills are essential whether you are interested in landing a new job or if you are meeting with colleagues or friends for dinner after work. Having the ability to properly communicate and convey your message is a way to captivate your audience while garnering attention from those around you. When you feel confident in what you say, others are much more likely to listen. Some of the most prominent questions you may be asked regarding your communication skills when you are in an interview include: What is your preferred communication style? Do you enjoy meeting face-to-face or do you prefer another form of technology to communicate with others? Do you find it difficult to work with others who have vastly different personalities from your own? How comfortable are you with engaging with clients or customers who have been difficult to deal with in the past? Are you able to remain calm, cool, collected, and professional at all times while communicating with disgruntled clients or employees? How do you approach clients or customers who are unhappy with the products or services you provide? What steps do you take to ensure that our clients and customers are satisfied with the service they have received from us? Are you willing to remain flexible with new methods of communication available for our clients and customers as we continue to expand our business? What are your strengths and weaknesses when it comes to communicating with others? Have you taken the necessary steps to improve on them? How did you discover your communication weaknesses and did it affect your last position? Understanding the importance of behavior based interview skills is a way to feel confident and comfortable with the decisions you make while meeting with employers and hiring managers. The more comfortable you become in your own skin and with the skills you have, the easier it becomes to answer behavioral-based questions with honest and thoughtful responses. Author Bio:

Fender, Gibson or rather Cordoba? Dreadnought, Sunburst, or how about the banjo? Choosing your guitar is not exactly easy…The classical guitar is usually the first choice when you want to start learning how to play the guitar. And for this you are going to have to leave aside your rock 'n' roll ref erences. Instead, we are talking virtuoso classical guitarists like Andres Segovia, Ana Vidovic, and Paco Pena. You'll be playing a repertoire of Scarlatti, Mozart, Beethoven, and Bach, from the baroque to the Spanish guitar. Get excited! With the nylon string instrument, if you want to take classical guitar lessons, you'll be a guitar player with great musicianship, an appreciation of classical music, and a fantastic fingerstyle technique played with your fingernails. The people with the best guitar technique in guitar music are all classical guitar players. However, before you're at a soloist recital, music conservatory, or headlining a guitar festival, let's turn to practical matters. Like any beginner musician, you’re probably not quite sure where to go to buy a guitar, and above all, how not to exceed your budget. You might be wondering how much a nylon string guitar is going to set you back.Don’t worry!  Many possibilities exist that allow you to choose the guitar of your dr eams without hurting your bank account…  And just remember, now you can say with pride that you are a classical guitarist!Practicalities: The Average Price of a Classical Guitar, and Where (and Where Not) to Buy One.  The beginner guitar industry can be a bit of a scam, taking advantage of people that want to play guitar but that don't necessarily have the solid foundation of knowledge to know what they are looking for. So, don't let your desire to get your fingers on the fretboard push you into buying something crappy just because it has nylon strings. The Internet: A Warning. In this day and age, your first reflex will be to look on the Internet to give you an idea of the price of a classical guitar.  Big mistake! On the Internet, you can find anything and everything. Therefore, the canvas is too big to give you an idea of the real price of a guitar. To avoid spending hours on the Internet, know that by typing “classical guitar” on Google, you will see that the cheapest price is around $40 and can go up to $5000.Relax. You will also find many models of guitars at low prices, around $130, which is quite good for a classical guitar. But don’t get too caught up on inexpensive guitars, especially on the Internet. You won’t be able to check out the quality of the guitar before you buy it.It’s recommended that you try out a guitar before buying it.This is good advice for anyone planning on buying a guitar. Unless you already know what model of guitar you want and what it sounds like, it’s generally not recommended that you buy your first instrument on the Internet. The product that you will receive doesn’t always match what you’re expecting.Old Fashioned? The Music Store. To avoid this misunderstanding, go to a specialized store.Music stores are present in all major cities and are run by enthusiasts. You can ask them advice about buying your first guitar and starting to play the string instrument. In addition, the seller will be able to offer you seve ral choices of guitars according to your budget. The majority of staff in music shops have the knowledge of a good guitar magazine - but they are there in human form. And they'll talk you through everything you might want to know about the cutaway, rosewood tonewoods, or the construction of the fingerboard.Store prices do not really differ from the Internet. You will find guitars for beginners between $100 and $150, along with guitars that are $500 or more.A Used Guitar? For those with a tighter budget, there’s always the option of buying a used guitar.
